Transcript and Video Description

[Video Description: The video thumbnail features a blue overlay with a text bubble in the center that reads “Meet DeafHealth” in white text on a rose-colored background.

In the video: A white non-binary person with shoulder-length curly hair sits on a burnt orange ottoman in front of a large bird of paradise plant placed in the corner of the room. The corner is styled with cobalt blue bookshelves and a white wall, which displays a framed artwork resembling abstract plant forms.

Transcript: Hi! I’m Bee Gehman. I think we can all agree that leading a healthy life starts with understanding what your body needs. And that understanding comes from learning about your health.

Unfortunately, those educational opportunities have been lacking in the Deaf community, including in my own life. Looking back, I didn’t have access to information about my body, my health, or my rights, even though I had access to language. What was missing was the chance to learn in my language.

Because of that, I often felt disconnected from my body, like it didn’t fully belong to me. Especially after doctors kept trying to fix my Deafness like it was a problem. That message, my body was somehow broken, started to affect how I saw every part of myself.

I was never given the chance to see my body as perfect as it is. That this body is mine and I have the right to make my own choices. That I deserve support, not control, when it comes to my health. I did not have any of that.

Making informed health decisions starts with body ownership—feeling connected, confident, and in charge of your body. Knowing: “This is my body. I decide what’s best for me. And I have a team that supports me.”

That’s why I joined this team to help ensure you have access to opportunities to learn about your health. To help you feel ownership over your body, too.

Come learn what DeafHealth can do for you.
