Transcript: You may qualify for Medicare benefits when you’re 65 or older if you meet certain conditions. You could qualify if you are a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident who has lived in the United States for at least five years, and you are receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits or are not yet collecting them but have worked long enough to be eligible for those benefits, or you or your spouse is a government employee or retiree who has not paid into Social Security but has paid Medicare payroll taxes while working. Sometimes, your family members may be eligible based on your work record, which depends on different scenarios. Qualifying for the program is not always automatic. Medicare eligibility depends on factors such as: your age, your citizenship or residency status, your work history, and your specific medical conditions. Before enrolling, it’s important to understand your options for enrollment and the rules for Parts A, B, C, D, and Medigap.
