Transcript: What’s Medicare Part D? It helps you pay for medications and provides prescription drug coverage. Part D is optional. If you decide not to enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible and join later, you may have to pay a penalty. Even if you do not currently take any prescription drugs, it’s a good idea to consider purchasing drug coverage. Each plan covers different drugs at different prices. Before selecting your plan, it is important to check if your medicine is covered. If so, at what cost - including the out-of-pocket costs, available pharmacy options, and coverage phases. You can enroll in Part D if you are already enrolled in Part A and/or Part B. Or you can choose to enroll in Part C, which bundles all coverage into one plan. If you have prescribed medication, make sure to check Part C coverage before you enroll. Your premium, or the amount you pay per month, depends on the plan you choose. Regardless of income, health status, or prescription drug usage, everyone with Medicare can enroll in Part D.
